College professor Dorothy Burton Skårdal was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1922. She attended Middlebury College (B.A. 1944), Radcliffe College (M.A. 1945), and Harvard University (Ph.D. 1963), where she studied with Oscar Handlin. In 1953 she married Olav Skårdal (1919-2004) and moved to Norway where she taught American Civilization at the University of Oslo (1965-1991).
